China’s Drought of the Century

Wuhan is suffering from the worst drought in 60 years. (From a source inside China)

An ongoing drought in central and eastern China not seen in 50 or 100 years has dried up many rivers.

Downstream provinces near the Three Gorges Dam have been scourged, the Yangtze River is withering, and China’s largest freshwater lake is nearly dry, pushing the ecological system in a large area to the brink of calamity.

Human activities are also being badly impacted. Drinking and irrigation water is in short supply, rice crops are dying, and cargo vessels are stranded.

And the threat of extinction to one wildlife species highlights all those troubles.

Finless Porpoise

The Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow Nature Reserve, a wetland in the Yangtze Basin near Shishou city in China’s central Hubei Province, is the only sanctuary for the endangered finless porpoise.

During this year’s breeding season, which lasts from April to June, the worst drought in 50 years has caused water levels in most parts of the reserve to drop to less than 10 feet, and even as low as 6 feet in some places, severely threatening the survival of the finless porpoises, the Yangtze Daily reported on May 21.

When research staff at the Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow Nature Reserve monitored the health of one of the finless porpoises, from the Yangtze river, a reporter took this photo showing a tear flowing from the animal's eye on May 20. (From a source inside China)

Humans are also contributing to the low water condition in the reserve. Although taking water that flows from the Yangtze into the reserve is strictly prohibited, residents from nearby villages are operating pumps 24 hours a day to meet their own water needs during the drought season.

The low water levels are not only restricting the porpoises, but also making them rather sad, according to Chinese media reports. One report recounted that when research staff at the reserve monitored one of the mammals’ health, a reporter took a photo of the animal with a tear coming from its eye.

Poyang Lake

Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake is said to be experiencing the worst drought in 100 years, holding only one-tenth of last year’s water level. Some areas of the lake have completely dried up, with four-inch wide cracks. Cars are able to drive across the lakebed, China National Radio (CNR) reported on May 21.

Wang Qiaolong who worked in the Poyang Lake Natural Reserve for 28 years, told CNR that the drought has killed large number of aquatic plants, fish, shell fish, and mussels, which in turn threatens migratory birds.

Rice crops in the area are also in danger.

An employee of the Poyang County government told The Epoch Times that the disaster is very severe and all the reservoirs and lakes are almost dry.

“The Yangtze River is drying up and the Poyang Lake has long dried up. If ‘old grandpa Heaven’ doesn’t send rain, there will be no harvest at all. Jiangxi Province is an important grain producer for the country, but this year we’ve lost big time,” he said.

The 131 large- and mid-sized irrigation pump stations in the cities of Nanchang, Jiujiang, and Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, have not been pumping water as usual because of the low water level at Poyang Lake.

About 5,330,000 mu (878,000 acres) of early season rice in Jiangxi Province are affected. Of the mid-season rice, about 1,400,000 mu (231,000 acres) cannot be planted because there is no water in the rice fields, state media said on May 21.

In Hunan Province, another large rice producing area, 28 counties are under “heavy” drought and 12 counties under “severe” drought, according to other reports.
Hardest hit was Xinhua County, where 90 percent of the fields could not be planted.

In the Dongting Lake area—known as a land of plenty—much of the early season rice crops died this year due to the drought.

Poyang Lake, once China's largest freshwater lake, has dried up, and cars can now drive on the lakebed. (From a source inside China)
An official from Yangtze River’s management office told the U.K.’s Telegraph that the drought affecting the Yangtze is the first of its kind in half a century. The river's water level is the lowest since 2003 when the Three Gorges Dam began operation, he said. Although storms are imminent, he feared that even heavy rain cN not raise the water level by much.

Commerce is also suffering due to the drought, and shipping on the Yangtze has become a problem.

In Shandong Province, as water levels dropped, over 1,300 canal and cargo boats have been stranded in the Zaozhuang section of the Grand Canal, which links Beijing to Hangzhou, New Tang Dynasty Television reported on May 24. Only 300 boats a day are allowed to pass through, and vessels weighing more than 1,500 tons have been turned away.

The same report also quoted a survey by the Hubei Agricultural Department saying the five-month drought has left over 300,000 people and nearly 100,000 livestock in the province short of drinking water.

Regime Response

On May 19, China’s State Department issued a “Three Gorges Dam Post Construction Plan,” admitting the Dam has negatively influenced the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. On May 20, the regime decided to increase the amount of water released by the dam to 10,000 cubic meters per second in order to help relieve downstream drought conditions.

Admitting there are some problems with the dam indicates that the problems are so serious that the authorities cannot hide them anymore. Acknowledging this now will help some officials to escape punishment, hydraulic expert Wang Weiluo told The Epoch Times .

The Post Construction Plan is actually Hu Jintao’s and Wen Jiabao’s public announcement to distant themselves from the Deng Xiaoping and Li Peng era, when the decision to build the dam was made, according to former Xinhua News Agency senior reporter Dai Qing, in an interview with Hong Kong’s Apple Daily. In previous years Dai Qing conducted extensive research and wrote a book on the dam.

Dai regards the Three Gorges Dam a heavy burden, a national calamity, and the source of “countless disasters” for the Chinese people.

Exploding Watermelons, Latest Food Scandal in China

A farmer, Liu Mingsuo was hoping to cash in on his watermelon farm this year. But now he’s counting his losses after his watermelon crops began exploding on the ground.

Liu only started growing watermelons this year. He says a local agricultural expert advised him to spray his crops with a type of chemical. It’s supposed to make the melons grow bigger and taste sweeter. But in a bizarre twist, the watermelons began bursting open, well before they were ripe. In just one morning, Liu had to throw out more than 11,000 pounds of his crops.

Farmers nearby are also finding their watermelons exploding. Even those with crops that seem fine are having difficulty selling them, because fruit markets fear they could explode later.

This is the latest case of Chinese food producers trying to make a quick buck by artificially boosting their products. Some netizens say they’re glad the watermelons exploded on the farms because now the chemicals won’t reach their mouths.

The Chinese regime has allowed wider media coverage of food scandals recently. It comes after growing public anger over a series of toxic or dangerous foods that have made their way to consumers.

(Clearwisdom.net) The annual World Falun Dafa Day celebration in Queensland, Australia was held on May 7 to 8, 2011 in Brisbane. More than twenty government officials and dignitaries from Queensland sent congratulatory messages to the event. Guests from all walks of life took part in this joyful celebration. Through a series of performances and activities, people gained a deeper understanding of Falun Dafa. The persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese Communist Party once again caught people's attention.

The two-day celebration attracted people from all walks of life and guests of different nationalities. The celebration featured a guest reception held in downtown Brisbane, an exercise demonstration, a “Stories of Falun Gong” photo exhibit, and cultural and artistic performances. The second day's activities began with a short film, “The Real Story of Falun Dafa,” and then practitioners and guests jointly celebrated the 60th birthday of Master Li Hongzhi, founder of Falun Gong.

Senator for Queensland, Mark Furner: I encourage Falun Gong practitioners continually to assimilate Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance

The Queensland Falun Dafa Association received a total of 19 congratulatory messages and letters from local government officials. In the letters, elected officials sincerely wished the World Falun Dafa Day celebration a great success.

A congratulatory letter from Senator for Queensland, Mark Furner
Senator Mark Furner stated in his letter that the Australian government still holds serious concerns over human rights in China. “We urge China to protect the rights of its citizens to criticize the government, as recognized in Article 21 of the Chinese Constitution, and call upon Chinese security authorities to exercise restraint in dealing with protesters and other activists. Additionally we call for the release of those who have been detained for expressing political views.”

Former national policy advisor to the Republic of China: Falun Gong will ultimately win the battle between righteousness and evil

Professor Qiu Chuiliang, from the Political Department of the University of Queensland, also former national policy advisor, praised Falun Gong in a speech. He said, “Falun Gong has made tremendous contributions to safeguard human dignity.”

The practitioners' exquisite performances brought a sense of goodness and peace to those in attendance. Some people asked, “Where are there practice sites?” “Where can I buy Zhuan Falun?” “Why does the Chinese Communist Party persecute Falun Gong?”

Falun Gong is of great help for one's physical and mental wellbeing, family and society

Every year, World Falun Dafa Day is a special and important day for Falun Gong practitioners. It's the 19th anniversary of Falun Dafa's introduction to the public and this year it is also the 60th birthday of Master Li Hongzhi, founder of Falun Gong. Besides practitioners from Brisbane, practitioners from the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Perth, also came to celebrate this great and grand occasion.

Helen started practicing Falun Gong in May 2005. She recalled that she saw a Falun Dafa book at her local library and was curious. She said, “When I was in China, all that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) instilled in people was that Falun Dafa is not good. Now this book was right before my eyes and I had an opportunity to see if it is good, so I borrowed the book and finished reading it within two days. My feeling was that it is very good. The book teaches people to be kind, and to conduct oneself according to the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. It is completely unlike what the CCP said. So I realized that the CCP has concocted a rather big lie.”

Taiwan: Celebrating World Falun Dafa Day at Sun Moon Lake (Photos)

(Clearwisdom.net) May 13 is World Falun Dafa Day and also the birthday of Master Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Dafa. On May 8, 2011, almost 1,000 Falun Gong practitioners from central Taiwan held activities at Sun Moon Lake, a famous tourist spot, to celebrate the day and introduce the beauty of the practice to tourists.

Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong) is a cultivation practice guided by the characteristics of the universe—Truthfulness, Benevolence, and Forbearance. Master Li Hongzhi started teaching Falun Dafa to the public on May 13, 1992.

Group exercises at Sun Moon Lake

In the morning, practitioners assembled at several spots around Sun Moon Lake. They demonstrated the exercises, passed out truth-clarifying materials and introduced Falun Gong to tourists. There were practitioners at almost every nearby tourist spot in the morning. In the afternoon, they held celebrations at Yidashao Harbor at the lake.

At the harbor, practitioners open a giant banner that read “World Falun Dafa Day.” The Divine Land Marching Band, consisting of 180 Falun Gong practitioners, and New Tang Dynasty Television's Flag-Drum team performed. Young practitioners performed traditional Chinese dances. Practitioners also demonstrated the exercises.

Jeff, an Australian tourist, and his wife were attracted to the exercise demonstration. He told practitioners that he had heard about Falun Gong in Australia, and knew about the persecution in China. Practitioners invited him to join the exercises so he learned them while his wife read the truth-clarifying materials. After doing the exercises, he said he felt great. He said that he felt energized and would learn more about Falun Gong after he gets back to Australia.

Practitioners also set up truth-clarifying displaying boards at the harbor to tell the public how Falun Gong has spread around the world and expose the persecution in China. Ms. Chen, a practitioner from Yunlin, said: “More and more tourists from Mainland China are willing to listen to me telling them the truth of Falun Gong. For example, this morning, I talked to a group of Chinese tourists at Xuanguang Temple. They all listened quietly. Some of them smiled at me. One Chinese gentleman quit the Chinese Communist Party. I asked him to pass on the information of quitting the party in China, and he agreed.”

Viewing the photos

Ms. Chen said: “Not only tourists, but also people I've met on the internet are glad to hear the truth of Falun Gong.” Ms. Chen and her husband chat with Chinese people on the internet and find that more and more Chinese people are willing to listen to them now. Some people have contacted Ms. Chen, asking for more details about the practice. Some of them have asked her for the programs that help to break through the internet blockade in China. Some of them ask her when the Communist Party will fall. “More and more have learned the truth,” Ms. Chen concluded.

Mr. Chang, a retired elementary school teacher, often comes to Sun Moon Lake to clarify the truth of Falun Gong to Chinese tourists. He also has the same impression that more Chinese people are willing to learn the truth now. Seventy-two-year-old Mr. Chang smiled: “Practicing Falun Gong improves my health. So, I want more people to know about it and benefit from it. When my friends say that I've become younger and younger, I always recommend Falun Gong to them. This morning, I talked to a Chinese tourist for a long time. I told him about the persecution of Falun Gong in China. I told him about the organ harvesting. He said that that information is not available to the public in China.”

Another Mr. Chang, a computer engineer, passed out truth-clarifying materials at the harbor. He also mentioned that more and more Chinese people accept the materials now. He often goes to hotels to talk to Chinese tourists when he gets the chance and most of them are happy to talk to him.

Researchers Say Apples Pack a Powerful Antioxidant Punch

Scientists continue to confirm that there may be validity to the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

New findings reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry provide the first evidence that apple consumption extends the average lifespan of test animals by 10 percent. The study supports previous research, which has strongly suggested that antioxidants inherent in apples can protect the body against the damage of free radicals.

The new results were obtained with fruit flies, which commonly serve as stand-ins for human subjects in hundreds of research investigations each year.

In the study, Zhen-Yen Chen and colleagues from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Tianjin Jianfeng Natural Product Company in Tianjin, China, found that apple antioxidants, known as polyphenols, extended the average lifespan of fruit flies and also helped preserve their ability to walk, climb, and move.

In addition, antioxidants reversed levels of multiple biochemical substances found in older fruit flies, which are markers for age-related deterioration.

“Apple polyphenols are an excellent source of dietary antioxidants,” Chen and his research team report in the research paper.

This study comes on the heels of another recent study involving human subjects conducted at Florida State University and reported on this year at the Experimental Biology 2011 conference in Washington, D.C.

The research evaluated the long-term cardioprotective effects of the daily consumption of apples over six months among post-menopausal women. It was found that the women who ate apples experienced a 23 percent decrease in LDL cholesterol, which is known as the “bad cholesterol.” Daily apple consumption also resulted in the lowering of lipid hydroperoxide levels and C-reactive protein among those women.

Antioxidants are known to be abundant in a variety of fruits and vegetables (especially those that are brightly colored, such as apples, blueberries, broccoli, and tomatoes) and can lower our risk of heart disease and cancer, and possibly other conditions that can develop from the proliferation of free radicals as we age.

In addition, scientists have calculated the antioxidant power of an apple alone is equal to more than 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C, according to the American Institute of Cancer Research.

Clean Food for Chinese Communist Officials Amid Safety Scandals

As food safety scandals continue to emerge in China, local media revealed that some communist officials are supplied with clean, safe products, specially grown for them.

In an article that was taken offline, the Southern Weekend reported last week on a special greenhouse in Beijing. It’s protected by a six-feet high iron fence, and its organic produce goes to Beijing Customs officials.

And these “special food suppliers” are not limited to Beijing. Their products range from fruits and vegetables to pork and poultry. These suppliers have to comply with strict safety standards before their products can reach the mouths of communist officials.

For most ordinary Chinese, this is a far cry from how their food is managed.

[Beijing Resident]:
“Beijing’s Education Department has a block of land near Hebei. They have everything there, fish, vegetables, all taken care of by their own people. The Department’s officials share the produce, and that’s what they eat. Only ordinary citizens have no one looking out for them. The officials live happily, and the people eat what they can and await death.”

Whether it is beans, rice, buns or pork, Chinese consumers have been hit with a string of toxic or dangerous foods.

Even so, the Chinese regime’s head of food safety Zhang Yong claimed last Friday that the overall situation of food safety was good. He blamed the media for over exaggerating, saying the problems only affect a small part of the public. His comments have since come under attack by netizens, who want authorities to do more to ensure the safety of their food.

Transplant Experts Discuss Forced Organ Harvesting in China

A group of transplant experts voiced their concern about forced organ harvesting during the 2011 American Transplant Congress in Philadelphia on May 1st. Since 2006, allegations that the Chinese regime is killing prisoners of conscience for their organs have come under international scrutiny.

The panel discussion host, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting invited Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas to speak. Matas and fellow Canadian rights advocate David Kilgour have spearheaded investigations into forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in China. Many of the victims are practitioners of the persecuted Falun Gong spiritual practice.

Matas presented evidence of their findings - including the transcripts of phone conversations between investigators posing as someone needing a transplant asking Chinese doctors about live organs.

[David Matas, Human Rights Lawyer & Co-author of Bloody Harvest]:
“Caller: We want fresh, live ones. Dr. Dai: They are all alive, all alive. Caller: How many live transplants have you done? Dr Dai: We have done 400 to 500 cases. Your major job is to prepare the money, enough money and come. Caller: How much is it? Dr Dai: If everything goes smoothly, it’s about RMB 150,000 to 200,000. Caller: How long do I have to wait? Dr Dai: I need to check your blood-type, if you come I can do it for you within one week. Caller: I’ve heard some come from those who practice Falun Gong, those who are very healthy. Dr Dai: Yes we do, I can’t talk directly to you over the phone.”

Medical Director of Kidney Transplant Program at UCLA, Dr. Gabriel Danovitch says the international transplant community must do more to stop forced organ harvesting from executed prisoners.

[Dr. Gabriel Danovitch, Medical Director of Kidney Transplant Program UCLA]:
“All I’m saying is if we do nothing, if we do nothing, we will share the guilt.”

Many medical experts who attended the panel discussion condemned the Chinese regime.

[Kate Tranotti, Medical Researcher at ICON]:
“It’s very similar to Nazi Germany during World War II. I think it’s atrocious. I do think the world needs to wake up.”

[Yang Jinrui, Physiatrist]:
“Everyone understood one important issue. That is, if using organs from executed prisoners is against medical ethics, then the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners is plain murder and a crime. I think this idea cannot be confused.”

During the discussion international pharmaceutical companies were also urged to do their part, by stopping drug trials on patients who have received organs from unidentified sources in China.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Returns to New York

After more than two months touring Europe, Shen Yun Performing Arts arrived back in New York on Tuesday.

The company toured 12 countries in Europe, putting on shows in 17 different cities.

[Leeshai Lemish, Shen Yun Master of Ceremonies]:

“This year is the third year touring Europe for some of us, so a lot of cities and theaters are already familiar with us. They are already used to us. In the London Coliseum it was the same. That theater is beautiful, very high level. The audience in attendance was also very high society people. From our contact with them at a reception [after the show], they greatly benefited [from the performance], you could say they understood the performance.”

Audiences applauded the performers who bustled from city to city, sometimes leaving late at night for the next stop on their tour.

[Rutang Chen, Shen Yun Orchestra Conductor]:

“Clapping until their palms hurt... they all applauded warmly. We were really touched.”

[Yungchia Chen, Choreographer and Principal Dancer]:

“They felt they had entirely broken through European audiences’ habitual appreciation of performances. Normally they only clap at the very end of a performance. During our performances, like the little monks one, they applauded in the middle eight times.”

Although Shen Yun has come to the end of its European tour, audiences in New York City will be treated to a special line-up of Shen Yun performances at Lincoln Center next month.

Singapore: Practitioners Celebrate World Falun Dafa Day (Photos)

(Clearwisdom.net) Falun Dafa practitioners in Singapore held a celebration on the afternoon of May 2, 2011. They respectfully wished Master Li Hongzhi a Happy Birthday while celebrating the 19th anniversary of Falun Dafa's first introduction to the public, the 12th World Falun Dafa Day. The Divine Land Marching Band and Waist Drummers presented performances to celebrate the special day.

Singapore: Practitioners celebrate World Falun Dafa Day

Ms. Zhang told the reporter that she felt fortunate to become a Falun Dafa practitioner. She expressed her thanks to Master Li Hongzhi for bringing the humankind the wonderfulness of Falun Dafa. She said, “Dafa is pure and righteous, can truly bring goodness to people, and help one find the right direction. Morality in modern society slides down, all kinds of enticement, pursuit for money, property and positions, all make people live in pain. After practicing Falun Gong, I take things lightly. I no longer feel lonely and confused, but enjoy a rich, full and meaningful life.”

Ms. Wu began looking for Falun Dafa after seeing Shen Yun performance in Australia in 2008. She said, “I felt great energy while watching the performance. After returning home, I searched the website for Falun Dafa books. It took me two weeks to finish reading all published books. My mind became as simple and pure as when I was young. I had been looking for before, but couldn't get anwers. I read some books on religions, but couldn't understand its meaning, but I got the answers in Falun Dafa. I can see things in a broader perspective.”

Ms. Tang began practicing Falun Gong in 2001. She talked about the benefits she'd enjoyed in ten years of cultivation practice. She said, “I felt uncomfortable all over before practicing Falun Gong. I suffered from bone spur in my cervical vertebra, and pain in my shoulder blade. I saw a specialist in the hospital for eleven years, but couldn't find a cure, however, my neck pain disappeared only two weeks following my practice of Falun Gong.” Ms. Tang said that she has remained steadfast in her practice despite many things she has experienced over the past ten years. When the staged self-immolation incident at Tiananmen Square took place, many people were deceived by the hoax orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party, but Ms. Tang was not affected. She said, “I was asked if I still dared to practice, but I was not shaken. I have persisted to this day. I'm very grateful to Master !”

Friends of Vienna State Opera Recommend Shen Yun

Shen Yun Performing Arts received a heartfelt welcome at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna on Sunday. Vienna is known for its heritage of high-class cultural performances. The secretary general of the Friends of Vienna State Opera was enthusiastic about the show.

[Dr. Thomas Dänemark, Secretary General, Friends of Vienna State Opera]:
“Well I have to say, as I‘m used to Opera and also to ballet - classical ballet - I was very, very, very enthusiastic about the performance today.”

He hopes his friends can see Shen Yun in the future.

[Dr. Thomas Dänemark, Friends of Vienna State Opera]:
“I say go and see it, if you still have time of course, this week. If they come back next year again, what I hope very strongly, it will be more known and I really want to recommend it warmly to everybody.”

The Vienna audience is known for being demanding and critical.

[Oliver H. Stadlbauer, Editor, nurKULTUR Cultural Magazine]:
“For sure, the audience in Vienna - as I have observed, heard and seen - puts an especially high standard on quality and the performance, and capability of expression of the singers and musicians. And the resonance was absolutely amazing - so much that one really can speak of a high level performance.”

Shen Yun has its own unique live orchestra, which combines both Western and Eastern music traditions.

[Oliver H. Stadlbauer, Editor, nurKULTUR Cultural Magazine]:
“A fantastic combination regarding the music, the singers, the soloists… a really great cultural evening.”

Shen Yun will perform in Vienna through May 4th.

Indian Students Invent Eco-Friendly Motorbike

In a bid to promote green energy, engineering students from Palwal City in India's northern Haryana state, have designed a motorbike that runs on oxygen.

The students say their model is a breakthrough invention for eco-friendly vehicles and will reduce dependency on non-renewable fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

[Pratham Pal, Engineering Student]:
"This bike is different from others because the engine doesn’t burn fuel, nor does the temperature rise. The air is compressed and transferred to the engine without any combustion. The piston reciprocates from the air pressure leading to an up-down movement, making the flywheel run and the bike move.”

Students say the basic concept behind the invention is to achieve an equivalent thrust of blast inside the engine without using any combustion.

The bike can run at a speed of six to 12 miles an hour for up to 370 miles using 100 liters of 300 PSI oxygen.

Eco-friendly vehicles are becoming more popular in India as pollution increases, making the students’ prototype viable.

The students are hoping to get financial assistance to develop their prototype further so that they can reach a wider range of customers.

Highly Contagious AIDS-Like Disease Spreading in China

In a small hotel across from the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a reporter from New Express Daily, dressed in an isolation suit, interviewed a dozen “unusual” patients from different areas of China. Their symptoms are painful and debilitating, and AIDS-like, but repeated tests for HIV have come up negative.

Lin Jun, one of the patients interviewed in the March 24 New Express Daily report, said he used to be chubby, but now he is skin and bones, and his joints have become all deformed.

Lin is referred to in the group as “big brother” for his kindness and giving fellow patients hope when they feel hopeless, with some having considered suicide.
A poster to promote AIDS awareness ahead of World AIDS Day in Beijing. A highly contagious AIDS-like disease is spreading in China, However, HIV tests come up negative.

In 2008 Lin’s mother received a blood transfusion at a hospital. Afterwards, she experienced frequent night sweats, numb limbs, aches all over, creaking joints, rashes on her hands, and weight loss.

In May of that year, Lin accidentally became infected through contact with his mother’s blood. Fourteen days later, he fell ill with swollen lymph nodes on his neck, sore knees that made clicking sounds, and pain all over his body. He also started vomiting after every meal, and the left side of his face swelled up. In half a year, his weight dropped from 82 kilograms (181 lbs) to 52 kilograms (115 lbs).

Three months later, his wife and child developed the same symptoms.

Lin said he went to every major hospital in Shanghai, but could not get a definite diagnosis. He has taken the HIV test eight times, and each time the test turned out negative.

Then he found an Internet blog called “The Negative Group,” which he learned stands for “HIV negative.” He realized that writing on this blog were all people like himself, with the same kinds of symptoms, desperate to find a cure.

Several Chinese media have recently reported that the Department of Health of Guangdong Province has confirmed that people in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong have fallen ill after being infected with an unknown virus. The patients think they have AIDS, but they test negative for HIV.

Guangdong has organized clinical experts, epidemiologists and psychologists to work together on these cases. The Health Ministry has also selected six provinces with more patients, including Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangsu and Guangdong, to conduct epidemiological studies, but there are no results yet, the reports said.

In most of the 30 cases investigated by New Express Daily for its March 24 report, people said their relatives and friends are also infected. Most of the 30 patients were infected through sexual contact. Some experts diagnosed them as having AIDS phobia.

However, the disease seems to be highly contagious and can spread by contact via any bodily fluid—through kissing, shared utensils, sweat, and even protected sex. Once infected, the immune system appears to be attacked, which results in a decrease of white blood cells and the body’s ability to defend against infectious disease and foreign materials.

In the past, official health agencies have only conducted HIV tests on these patients and have not checked for other, similarly pathological viruses. With HIV results coming up negative, many patients then stopped taking protective measures with their relatives. Subsequently, all their relatives and friends were infected, many have said.

One infected man told The Epoch Times that the disease is highly infectious and hard to prevent. His wife and two-year-old child both appear to have it. The child has lip and skin blood spots, he said.

A retired officer in his 40’s told The Epoch Times for a previous June 16, 2010 report that he had been infected with a disease with similar symptoms in 2009, at a get-together at a friend’s house. “I thought it was just a cold at the time, so I still participated in all kind of gatherings. Consequently, over 100 of my comrades in the army, relatives and friends were infected by me,” he said.

Taiwan: Falun Gong Practitioners File Criminal Charges Against Governor of Anhui Province (Photos)

(Clearwisdom.net) On the morning of April 18, 2011, the Taiwan Falun Dafa Association filed a criminal complaint with the High Prosecutor's Office against Wang Sanyun, the governor of Anhui Province in China, prior to his arrival in Taiwan. The association accused him of committing crimes of genocide, and requested the High Prosecutor's Office to make an urgent investigation and detain Wang. According to the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG), Wang Sanyun has commanded and directly participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners since 2001. Wang initiated the “Hurricane-F” operation in 2002 while he was the deputy Party secretary of Sichuan Province. The campaign hunted down and arrested Falun Gong practitioners throughout the province.

Following Guangdong Province Governor Huang Huahua, Shaanxi Province Governor Zhao Zhengyong, and Liaoning Province Governor Chen Zhenggao, Wang Sanyun is the fourth provincial level Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official who has faced charges upon visiting Taiwan. He is also the eighth high-ranking CCP official who to be sued by Falun Gong practitioners in Taiwan.

Wang Sanyun arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan around 11:00 a.m. More than 50 Falun Gong practitioners had come earlier, awaiting his arrival. The practitioners shouted, “Wang Sanyun, You're sued.” Wang looked around, but didn't say a word. Those who came to meet him remained silent.
Several reporters questioned Wang loudly, “You've been sued in Taiwan, what do you think of it? Do you want to respond?” Wang left the airport without looking back.
Teresa Chu, spokesperson for the Falun Gong Human Rights Lawyers Working Group, said that Wang Sanyun has committed the crime of genocide and violated the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Legislative Yuan and fifteen city and county councils in Taiwan have already passed the motion not to invite, receive, or welcome CCP human rights violators.
Professor Chang Ching-hsi and the team of lawyers met with the prosecutor, and emphasized that the prosecutors drafted “The Crime of Genocide Ordinance,” based on the “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.”
Yang Hsien-hung, president of the Taiwan Association for China Human Rights (TACHR) said that they were concerned about the issue of Wang Sanyun's visit to Taiwan. Yang stated that Taiwan, particularly, should check on human rights violations, and those who have bad human rights records should be denied entry to Taiwan.

(Clearwisdom.net) On April 24, 2011, more than one thousand Falun Gong practitioners from Taipei held group exercises and other activities at the Liberty Square, commemorating the April 25 appeal.

Liberty Square (also known as Freedom Square) is a public plaza covering over 240,000 square meters in Taipei City. At the east end of Liberty Square stands the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The square is flanked by the National Concert Hall on the north and the National Theater on the south. A park surrounds the plaza and a wall surrounds the site. The square sits within sight of the Presidential Office Building. Liberty Square regularly serves as the site of mass gatherings in Taiwan. Since being introduced to Taiwan in April 1995, Falun Gong quickly spread to every corner of the island. Practitioners are from all walks of life, and include college professors, doctors, lawyers, engineers, government officers, police, soldiers, businessmen, farmers, workers, students, and housewives. There are more than 1000 exercise sites in 300 towns and cities, including the remote areas.
After the Chinese Communist Party launched the brutal persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, practitioners in Taiwan began holding all kinds of activities to clarify the truth of Falun Gong and expose the brutality of the persecution. At the Liberty Square, practitioners have held dozens of rallies, candlelight vigils, signature collections, re-enacting of tortures, press conferences, and photo exhibitions. Many people, including government officials, have learned the truth of the persecution from these events and joined practitioners in opposing the persecution.
